Why The Time To Invest Is Now
As a cultural anchor institution deeply embedded in East San José located at the Mexican Heritage Plaza (La Plaza), the School of Arts and Culture at MHP (SOAC) supports and advocates on behalf of residents through a mission-driven arts and cultural lens. SOAC prioritizes uplifting community voice, resident strategies, and local solutions, focusing transformation at intersections unique to its Mayfair neighborhood through advocacy and activism. In a departure from traditional arts agencies, SOAC is committed to exploring how an arts and cultural organization can integrate creativity, service, place, and inclusion into crisis intervention, community development, and economic mobility. With this approach, SOAC has become an inspiring hub for creativity and social action through its dynamic mix of offerings, including a two-year emergency response during the pandemic.
Currently, SOAC is leveraging social purpose real estate as an enduring and progressive strategy to build a destination in East San José for preservation, activism, and creativity. According to Tides.org, “social purpose real estate focuses on spaces that serve the common good.” Through this lens, La Plaza has always been a community-operated, needs-serving space that creates assets that build power and financial strength within Mayfair, contributing to racial, social, cultural, and economic justice.
