As the 2022 events season kicks off at La Plaza, we would like to let you know about our current guidelines to attend an event at our facility. Updated on January 31, 2022


Required for Entry

Large indoor events at Mexican Heritage Plaza with 50 or more guests requires

  • All attendees age 5 and older and all staff to show proof of full vaccination before entering the facility. Individuals showing proof of vaccination must also be up to date with any booster shot for which they are eligible.

  • Valid forms of proof include one of the following: 

    • A CDC vaccination card or similar documentation issued by another foreign governmental jurisdiction;

    • A photo of a vaccination card as a separate document, or stored on a phone or electronic device;

    • Documentation of vaccination from a healthcare provider;

    • A personal digital COVID-19 vaccine record with a QR code that scans to display name, date of birth, vaccine dates, and vaccine type.

  • Proof of negative testing is allowed for all individuals in place of proof of vaccination. This includes any person (worker, performer, player, attendee, etc…) inside the building during the event.


Effective on or after February 4, 2022

On January 11, 2022, the San Jose City Council passed a superseding urgency ordinance of the City of San Jose to require COVID-19 vaccination for large indoor events at city-owned facilities (Mexican Heritage Plaza is a city-owned facility) and setting forth the facts constituting such urgency. All events that occur on or after February 4, 2022 will be required to follow this new ordinance. What are the major changes from prior versions of this ordinance?

The major changes in this new version of the ordinance (that were adopted by the Mayor and City Council on January 11, 2022) are:

  • Individuals showing proof of vaccination must also be up to date with any booster shot for which they are eligible

  • Proof of negative testing is allowed for all individuals in place of proof of vaccination. This includes any person (worker, performer, player, attendee, etc…) inside the building during the event; and

  • Children 5 and above are no longer exempted and will need to show proof of negative test of vaccination;

Large Indoor Event

What qualifies as an event that falls under this ordinance?

The specific language from the ordinance is as follows: “Large Indoor Event” means an event with fifty (50) or more people attending indoors. A Large Indoor Event may be public or private, may have either assigned or unassigned seating, and may be either general admission or ticketed events. A Large Indoor Event can also include an event without seating or without tickets. It does not include the ordinary and customary provision of public services, such as, public meetings, food programs, or library programs. “Large Indoor Event” does not include venues such as museums or the airport that are open to public circulation as part of their regular operations, except to the extent that such venues host qualifying events.
